Post Body

Hello! This is my firebelly newt (cynops orientalis) paludarium that I've had running for 4 years now. In that time the plants have changed a bit. Mostly the pothos has taken over which is ok, but I keep struggling with my land section in the back left. It's made of a glass container I planted with soil and plants. Version 1 was a plastic container that didn't last long. Upgraded to glass once I finally found something the right dimensions. Version 2 glass container- water leaked into it so it got boggy and plants died (a Fern of some sort that was growing too big anyway before it died). Version 3- I added aquarium silicone and replaced with a different plant (I don't recall what it was. Maybe a bromeliad of some sort? I was told it would be slow growing and needed to be watered in its well area?). This version also got super soggy eventually and the plant died. I've got stupid looking fake succulents in there right now. I've re-sealed my other same container and want to plant it again and swap it out. I'm just am at a loss for what to plant. I don't know if it's going to end up boggy again and I should choose something suited for that, or not? I water tested the seal and it's not leaking so hopefully it won't this time. I'll also harvest a new moss layer to put on top of the soil, if that matters for plant options. Oh, and the other thing to be aware of - the tank is kept cold. Water temps are 18C, so I don't know if this makes tropicals poorly suited? Mesh lid, so not a crazy humid environment. No mister or fogger. I tried running a mister once and it added too much water volume to the tank quickly and made the soil soaked.

Please help! I know nothing about plants as you've probably figured out. I love my newts and my paludarium but the plant aspect I keep failing at.
