This morning while biking with my son to grade school on a residential street (with no dedicated bike lanes), a car coming the opposite direction slowed and came to a stop as we approached.
She rolled her window down, so I thought maybe she needed help or had a question. Instead I got an indignant โIs that what you do? Teach your child to ride in the middle of the street?โ I gave an abrupt response basically saying โyes, that is what streets are forโ as we were already running late.
Cyclists have just as much rights to use the street as drivers, and it is safer for (middle school and up) children to ride in the "middle" of the street where they can be seen, as opposed to riding on the sidewalk/edge leading to the "they came out of nowhere" tragedies. This is why the speed humps on Ross have the bike carve-outs in the middle!
This is such an uphill battle. So please, if you hear your parents/grandparents ranting about kids on bikes in the street, please educate them.
