What do you guys tend to have as a margin goal?

For our residential, we are looking at a 43% margin average. We are moving into commercial and I am trying to figure out if what margin is appropriate for:

Large new construction Commercial exterior repaint Commercial interior repaint

For example, right now I am doing a bid for a 54 unit new appartment complex with about 74k sqft, including stair wells and common spaces.

Depending on the client's preferences for approach we are looking at either 81k or 95k both at about 38% margin.

The price per square foot then is either 1.09 or 1.28 per square foot.

Would you consider this competitive pricing for a project set for May?

For context, we are a $3M residential painting company similar in structure to Paris Painting. We have the crew capacity and management skills for this project but it is still newer to me to do these bids and our software doesn't have metrics appropriate for commercial projects, so I need to do everything by hand.
