Kayak Portaging Laws-Private Property

Hello r/paddlewisconsin
I'm wondering what the laws are for when you approach a dam or some obstacle that would require you to reasonably move your kayak from one body of water to the other? Say from the bottom of a dam up around the side to the top? Is it simply not doable on private property or do we have any laws that protect the act to do this?
