So, not to overreact or anything but, when watching our offense, the problem that we seem to have is that we are running 5 dudes that can kinda do it all, but none are masters of a particular aspect of the offense.
Holiday: pretty solid finisher, good vision, solid passing, good 3pt Vic: great finisher (although still getting his step), great 3pt, great midrange, great passing and vision Brog: excellent spot up shooter (although we absolutely dont use him that way) decent driver (methodical, which leads to good kick outs but commonly abandoned in no mans land), great passing, floor general TJ: great everything offensive, can do it all Myles: great 3, decent down low, solid midrange
So here's what sabonis offers, some of the best screens and bigman passing in the league. With him on the floor, we're able to run a consistent, albeit simple, offense with him as a conduit. Without sabonis, our offense is fast, fun but unreliable. Our guards can serviceably do anything which leads to each of them driving, maybe taking to the hole, but sometimes getting trapped out.
I think an excellent nba offense has a key, 3pt specialist role player that punishes whenever your d gets too cute. Last night, the heat couldn't make shit but robinson suddenly went off every time we had to double bam. It's that kind of tool that allows for flow. When we had bogey, you literally could not sag on him or he'd punish you.
I worry that that's what we lack. Everyone on the floor in our starting 5 can make it happen but, without a system and pieces that make a system dangerous, we're in danger of inconsistency. Our bench unit has this identity down. McConnell and jakarr run around like crack heads, and, in a perfect world, doug and justin make you pay when you overcommit to their penetration.
So when sabonis returns, we'll get that core of our offensive identity back, but, until then, I think our offense will struggle to be consistent. What do y'all think? This was just an idea I was thinking about after last night.
