Factory Roof Rack?

I have a 1998 GMC K1500 and I want to put a roof rack above my cab. Only problem is i haven't found a great aftermarket solution. So I thought I would go to junk yard and take the stock roof rack off a vehicle and mount it to my truck and use Thule adapters. Only problem is I don't know how roof racks are mounted.
Does anybody have an idea? 3M tape and a metric F-ton of 3M glue?
