As fascinating as these types might be, I don't understand why this guy's route is apparently canon?
First time dating a sociopath as the canon guy, my god Even yanderes have more consistency that him. I was aware of the two-faced trope but this was another level of gaslighting entirely. I felt honestly both in awe of his hypocritical "calling out" of the MC. He felt like someone with a god complex who hated the fact that he had a god complex and took it out on the MC. The MC and the cat are both the same that they're scared of him but can't help running back to him even after he's strangled them x number of times.
Are there parts of the game that explain why he is the way he is? Throughout his route, it seemed like he was all Mr. Aloof-Nice Guy then BAM, he assaults the MC for no reason. Even MC says she doesn't get why he's upset the first time he got all "intense" on her.
I've played haraguro characters but they never felt this jarring. What's wrong with his characterization? Is it the fact that he "flipped" too quickly or inconsistent writing? Or did I miss/misunderstand important scenes? The MC even points out she feels constantly out of sync and inferior to his character, constantly in a state of learned helplessness. Voicing her needs results in punishment. Not being truthful results in punishment. His route is like a test where all the options are wrong answers.
I was unsettled by the fact that he was calling the MC a hypocrite and liar while on his hypocritical white horse and even in his "happy end", I didn't feel happy at all when he returned, I wanted the MC to leave him and realize what he was doing to her. She keeps referring to him as an Asura all the while staying with him like a "d'aww, but he's so haawwt!!!"
Seriously wondering if the developers made his route as a parody of a canon true route? Or have I missed the point his route somehow?
I also don't get the whole difference between the 'Good' and 'Bad' ends in the affections towards the love interest. The answer is to love the LI without wanting his love in return or something? They all seemed more attached in the Good ends - total contradiction of the stuff they spout. I couldn't tell if this whole set-up and perspective framing was a critique of religion or cults or a legit praise of the institution.
Lastly, HuiHai is adorable fluffball - my favourite ends are torn between his Bad and his Good end, slight learn towards Bad ('Scandal'-esque angst gets me yo). If anyone else knows of a game where you can 'corrupt' the love interest, do tell.
