Need Help with new hard drive in Macbook

I got a hard a new hard drive after my 2011 macbook had the prohibitory symbol and holding down command R during start up didn't do anything. Now i have a new HDD in my mac but I don't know how to install the os as i have very little experience with mac. What can i do? I've searched everywhere for a solution but haven't gotten any results.
