It's been two weeks since my surgery. It hasn't quite gone as expected. Besides the pain I was doing fine until a few days ago I noticed that my stoma site didn't really look right. It also got a lot smaller in a short span of time. My stoma is now 1/2 inch x 3/4 inch. I freaked out and my mom took me to the ER of the hospital I had my surgery at. It's almost always a 12 hour hospital, experience at that particular ER so I didn't get much sleep. I waited 5 boring hours to be triaged.
They ordered a CT scan and said everything looked fine on it. There was just a little swelling around the stoma site. My stoma has retracted and I did have an infection at my stoma site so I was given antibiotics. Puss was coming out of it and it just overall looked pretty nasty. They said the stitches were pulling away from my ostomy. The colorectal resident kept calling it an ileostomy which was odd. My WOC nurse said that my stoma is too small for normal colostomy consistency output and told me to try and make it applesauce consistency.
Today I think the infection might be better, but some of the stitches has come farther apart and a few of them aren't attached to the stoma anymore. I'm worried about the fact that we can't figure out how to get my bag to not leak. The colorectal resident said he didn't think that I needed to worry about a revision and the stoma would probably pop out more as time goes on. My WOC nurse wasn't as confident.
I'm not really sure what to do now. I've sent a message to my surgeon and I'm going to get advice so that I can try to figure out a way to get the bag to stop leaking. Today I've started getting a feeling of my stoma site tightening when I have output. It feels like the skin attached to the stoma is stretchinh and it hurts. Hopefully it doesn't get worse because I'd hate to be in the ER for 14 hours again. I'm kind of scared because it just doesn't look like it'll get better on it's own. I can't say for sure though since I'm not a doctor, but I have a bad feeling about it. I also don't want to question the doctor because he's a colorectal resident at a big research hospital in my state, but I'm really worried that things aren't going well.
