Question about fashion and gear for questing

So I had some cool cosmetic fashion pieces I wanted to wear instead of my usual plate armor and stuff. Would I be able to do story questing and other stuff in combat without having to wear armor every time?
Ideally Iād like to be able to wear my cool stuff instead of bulky armor and still go around doing my quests and finishing content. Is that feasible, or is armor the only way to go?
