Reviewing how classic old school play assumptions work in modern circumstances
Post Body

Not my blog post, but I read this today via Feedly and I thought it was particularly thoughtful and thorough.

https://alldeadgenerations.blogspot.com/2021/06/classic-vs-past.html

The author reviews the essentials of 'classic' style play as he calls it, and looks at the circumstances of modern play (smaller groups, shorter sessions, shorter campaigns) clash with old school games.

My own current change from his list of classic play is that I am not running an open table game, and so I am not requiring dungeon expeditions to return to safety at the end of the session. This allows me to keep the same kind of map layout (dungeons extend far from their entrances) and resource management of old school play. It was a concession that I dislike, but seemed necessary.

However, I found his own examination of the issues interesting and I may try some of his prescriptions to see if they help old school play fit with modern circumstances.
