So I've been involved with keeping up with the Oscar's for about 8 years now, since I was a freshman in High school, and I find that consistently, almost every year, the category wins or nominations (or more importantly lack thereof) coming from the music branch seem outdated, not representative of actual quality, and more than any other branch seems like they're not as impartial as most other branches. I'd like to hear thoughts from other people about their opinions on the music branch, maybe I'm just mad that scores I liked and songs I liked didn't get the recognition I thought they deserved, but I'm curious to hear what yall think.
For example, I think the nomination of Indiana Jones last year was a terrible choice, especially when there were 3 scores from animated films that I thought were more than worthy (Elemental, The Boy and The Heron (Joe Hisaishi is one of the greatest film composers of all time and has 0 nominations to his name) and of course, Across the Spider-Verse, which i thought was the best score of last year no doubt). The loss of Babylon in 2023, the constant Diane Warren nominations, not nominating any songs that fall in the Hip Hop or Rap genre for any film and sticking with more conventional, forgettable songs, and a seemingly heavy focus on name recognition as opposed to individual song quality. I thought Naatu Naatu was an inspired win, and wasn't upset about What Was I Made For? But the nominations especially for these categories has felt particularly weak this decade.
