I've made it no secret how much I adore The Substance but I can't help but be a disappointed that for all the praise (deservedly so) Demi Moore has been getting, Margaret Qualley despite being the co-lead doesn't have equal. I get it, this is Moore's big comeback and her best performances in a decade spanning four decades and she is an actress who hasn't been getting the due she probably should. But I can't help but think of the hype around Whiplash and how similar it is here. You had a J.K. Simmons, another actor who'd been around for years but hadn't gotten the respect he deserved giving the performance of a lifetime and sparking a resurgence for him. Meanwhile, we had a young and hungry actor in Miles Teller who was also giving the performance of his career and as much as Simmons is what made Whiplash unforgettable, Teller is just as important in making that film what it is. Without Miles Teller, the film isn't half as good, and it's a bit unfortunate not more of a campaign was given for his work in that film.
Similarly, for as much as Demi Moore makes The Substance pack such a punch, in giving that film such pathos, if she does not have as fearless a dance partner as Margaret Qualley, the film isn't as powerful. I'd go into more details about why but the film just came out and I know some still haven't seen it so I suggest yall experience it for yourself. But for those who have, I just hope you don't forget to give credit to both halves of the film.

She was absolutely phenomenal
