What to do when the crown just falls off?

Post Body
So I've been keeping orchids for a while now, I'm definitely still new to it but I was taking care of a few of them, two which were quite gorgeous and placed in terracotta pots. One of them died recently from root rot which caused the crown to fall off and the stems to become dead.
Now something similar is happening to my other plant and today when i tried to look at it the crown, even with the healthy green leaves just snapped off. Does that mean it's pretty much dead?
Also for future reference should I never keep any orchids in terracotta again? I find it makes only the outer layer of moss dry up but keeps the inside of it moist for weeks at a time. Maybe that's what caused the root rot.
