When do you change the light cycle if grown indoor / hydroponic?

If you start with 8 or 9 hours on, then what exactly are you looking for on the plant to tell that it is time to raise to 18/6? Is there a visual indicator or does someone keep adding 30 minutes of light each week until at 18/6?
