Considering moving from Ubuntu
Post Body

Hi all,

So I brought a laptop a few weeks ago and put Tumbleweed on it and it's amazing (especially since GNOME 3.20 was installed swiftly after release). I love it and I'm feeling an itch to walk away from Ubuntu because.... well its pretty much Yast and Zypper that have sealed the deal here.

I have been looking at Google results for maybe the half hour and thought it might be quicker to bother the subreddit for testimonials and advice. From the search results I understand that Leap might be a better fit instead of using Tumbleweed on my desktop

Here are my questions:

  1. how does OpenSUSE handle proprietary drivers? I am currently using an NVIDIA GTX760 and it spends more time playing games than anything else. Is there an easy way to keep the drivers up to date like Ubuntu has recently been testing with a ppa?

  2. How are updates handled for new features and package updates? Something that bothers me about Ubuntu's LTS is the stale packages, Things should not stay almost exactly the same for 5 years. Does Leap handle this differently?

  3. Does the desktop environment get upgraded during the release cycle? is this something that OpenSUSE controls or is it dependant on whether SLE wants to update the DE for it to happen in Leap?

  4. As a whole, my desktop spends its time playing games in Steam, programming and doing media production like work (Ardour and OBS/Lightworks mostly) is there any reason you would suggest against using Leap for this job?

  5. Overall how does OpenSUSE Leap stack up against other LTS focussed distros? What does it do differently?

I apologise if this is against your rules or frowned upon in this subreddit. I am ok with being directed elsewhere for being lazy :)
