So, I do not pay the bills in my house, but I do deal with any customer service related stuff when issues arise. Yesterday, I found out that my parents pay $65/month for our two phones lines, and that more than half of that $65 is just fees. That made me decide to start looking at VOIP, which is a term I was familiar with, but not a service I have ever used. I am trying to do a ton of research and due diligence to figure out if a VOIP service, or Ooma specifically, would be a good alternative for us. We have gigabit internet, but I would not be able to hardwire the unit via ethernet, so I would be looking at the Telo Air. I see that Best Buy sells it for $110 with two handsets, which I feel is a very good price, given what I have paid in the past for our cordless handsets. I also see that I may be able to just use those cordless handsets, too, if I would like to. As I said, though, I have some questions, and I am hoping maybe you guys can help me out.
First, I imagine we would be using Premier, which would make the service in our area about $17/month total, after fees. I am quite happy with that instead of $65. Or, rather, my parents will be happy with that.
I imagine they would prefer to pay for Premier monthly, as opposed to yearly, so my first question is, does paying monthly keep you from getting the free number port?
My second question is, we have two phone lines in the house, so would I need to buy two Telo Air units, or would I still need only one? I am already presuming that we will have to pay the $40 port fee for both numbers, but I donβt know how that works with two lines, specifically. If I have to buy two Telo Air base units, one to plug each line into, would they still both work for the price of one Premier subscription, or would I have to have Premier on each device. Additionally, I suppose we would have to pay the $7 in fees for each line, correct?
I think I will have further questions, but only after I have answers to these. For those in here who have switched from traditional landlines to Ooma, has the service of the phone itself been about the same or better, or worse?
