The best way to avoid injuries in boardsports is learning how to fall properly. If you've been skateboarding or snowboarding for any length of time before hopping on a onewheel, chances are you've either figured out how to fall well, or are already a mess of partially healed injuries, or both.
u/thefloatlife has a great video that covers how to learn to fall in Episode 3 of Learning with Leary. Practicing falling and how to do it properly helps to build muscle memory when a surprise fall happens. It's really difficult to overcome the instinct to throw your hands out to catch yourself when falling. But, there are little things that can be done to help overcome that muscle memory in an emergency situation.
I taught snowboarding for 8 years, and when teaching beginners how to fall I would always have them ride with closed fists. Keeping your hands closed acts as a subconscious reminder of the lessons just learned about falling. Your muscles are already tensed in your fist when you begin to fall, and you become less likely to try to give the ground a high-impact high 5.
Obviously this isn't a replacement for good safety gear, and riding within your limits, but maybe this tip will help someone else out there to avoid or at least minimize a future injury. I hope it helps!
