Ever since I started working about 20yrs ago, I would give my parents1/3 of my salary so that they can pay for the utilities and food in the house. Whatever is left is for them to keep. When I got married 15yrs ago, I moved out and we had to closely budget our spending. The hard times hit and we found ourselves living in our car. From then on, we slowly worked ourselves out from the hole, found a place to rent and doing odd jobs to pay for everything. Earlier this year, we made some good money that enables us to breathe again, and I made the mistake of telling them we're doing better financially now. They kept persisting for me to start giving them money like I used to and I had to tell them I'm trying to save money to keep us away from the hole again. My parents are financially comfortable, they don't struggle with bills or mortgage. They just feel like I should give them money because it's my obligation as their child. My mum even went so far as to conclude that maybe we're poor is because we don't give them enough and God is punishing me for not being generous with them. FML.
