Far from giving a generalized opinion or implying that all parents are the same, I have to say that I've seen far too many being super lenient and extra-tolerant when their children decide to throw a tantrum.
I'm a parent myself. I have NEVER used verbal or physical violence on my child, yet she listens, objects, and obeys. The "Daddy, ten more minutes" at the park is actually 10 minutes, no need for "first warnings" or "last chances", for example.
She gets to postpone her duties for 5 minutes, though (Postponing and refusing is part of their nature, I guess), and when the time is up, she knows what to do.
If I have to say what it is that I feel I'm doing differently is that I talk to my daughter as an adult (she's 5), and she knows I'll raise my voice (not yelling) to speak with authority if I have to.
That's all. It's simple and unharmful, and it makes a huge difference.
PS: I'm writing this while a dad in the park is chasing and begging his son to hand him a sunscreen can he was spraying all over the kid's faces. It took him 10 minutes.
