So for context, I’m a big Oddworld fan. I got Abe’s Exoddus Xmas of 98 for the PC (cause I didn’t have a PlayStation, or any consoles) It was a gift from my Uncle who worked on the game, which was the coolest thing ever! As a 12 year old kid with not many games, I played the shit out of it, but never could beat it. I found some codes online that let you skip levels so I got to play a bunch of different parts of the game which was just as satisfying.
I recently got the Miyoo Mini and have been replaying and beating games from my childhood with an adult perspective and couldn’t wait for this series.
My thoughts after playing: This series peaked with Abe’s Exoddus. Which is crazy when you realize it was made in a 9 month crunch time for an obligation to Sony for a sequel. There is so much world building in the incredible 3D cutscenes and the art direction for all the locations, and such sense of place with everywhere you go, and understanding the between the characters and species. Something about possessing a Glukkon to tell a Slig to shoot a Slog is quite satisfying. Oddysee created this world, but Exoddus really ran with it and expanded on so much.
It’s kind of a shame they couldn’t keep this momentum going with their next projects. I played Munch’s Oddysee on my Steam deck and it just felt meh, it was interesting to see the switch to 3D gameplay, but the pre rendered 3D cutscenes of the 90s had so much more character and feel to them. And don’t get me started on New n Tasty and Soulstorm, that’s a whole nother post…
What do you think? Did this series peak with Exoddus or is my vision just clouded through my nostalgia goggles?
