Will we ever see the Oculus used for what is was originally intended, or was the FB deal a grab to compete in AR...not VR?

Post Body
Here are a couple of things that we know.
- Facebook bought...blah blah blah.Â
- They dropped "VR"
These 2 very simple concepts are leading me to believe that Facebook wants nothing to do with VR or gaming but rather build something that will compete with Google over social augmented reality - AKA, nothing whatsoever having to do with what the Oculus was originally intended for.
Rather than spend the time in R&D, wouldn't it make sense for Facebook to just buyout Oculus if they wanted to compete?
Just my idea on what's really going on here.
