NGD! Silvertone 1478 reissue - Pictured in it's new natural habitat :)
I recently was able to pick up one of these, and despite having some pretty high expectations it still leaves me impressed every time I pick it up.
I really cannot say enough about how happy I am with this purchase, out of an attempt at financial responsibility I do not get many chances to purchase many desired instruments - which in turn only allows me to take the leap for the ones I really want - and this Silvertone 1748 reissue gave me everything I was hoping for and more.
Without a doubt one of (if not the) absolute best reissues I have ever played. The roots of rock with modern sensibilities - absolute perfection. The build quality is amazing (solid maple and mahogany), this is not just a cheap cash-in reissue like you see from Danelectro with some of their older reissues. Silvertone did an incredible job recreating a classic and you can feel the care they took with it as soon as you pick it up.
The pickups give you great vintage tone while the (much appreciated) Bigsby and Tune-O-Matic roller bridge keeps everything nice and in tune - not to mention the incredible bound neck and excellent attention to fretwork. It is my opinion that the Silvertone 1478 reissue has been perfectly recreated with modern player upgrades with all of it's character intact.
If you're actually wanting a 1478 (I've noticed some reviews were poor because the reviewer didn't know what to expect - this is not a guitar to play metal or punk music on, even though rules are made to be broken I suppose) you cannot go wrong with this reissue, It's everything I love about the original updated with care for the players of today. This very much retains it's vintage character and sound, if you are interested in what a vintage guitar has to offer you will be happy with your choice.
Getting down to brass tacks the fact is that Silvertone totally knocked it out of the park with this one and recreated an iconic and beloved instrument for a new generation with incredible attention to detail while retaining all of the character and charm - the original classic modernized.
Now I could nitpick for the sake of nitpicking. I could nitpick about replacing the nut (I prefer bone) and make some commentary about the plastic tuning knobs but not only do they not bother me enough to matter - this is a recreation of the original classic - I find it actually bring me a sense of genuine nostalgia as per the original issue, and despite being plastic they cause no problems with tuning or tuning stability - even when really taking advantage of the much appreciated, upgraded Bigsby tremolo.
For those curious, it also takes pedals very very well. A crude, yet in my opinion accurate, comparison would be if Silvertone/Danelectro made a Fender Jazzmaster (of which I have built several) - it's really quite something special. I will be looking forward to future reissues from Silvertone, I really hope they decide to reissue the Silvertone 1450 ("Hornet") next, as I have found the Danelectro "Dead On '67" to be quite lacking in many ways, If the 1478 reissue is any indication I believe Silvertone could make one worthy for today's guitar players - I think Silvertone could actually pull it off and look good doing it.
