Parents say I’ll get killed at NYU, how bad is the crime?

So I really want to go to NYU for all the types of varying opportunities but my parents yell at me everyday saying that I’ll be killed in NYC if I go to NYU. How bad is the crime? I’ve never been to NYC or anywhere out of Florida.
