Need advice for pre med from NYU current students and alumni. (I’m planning to take the neural science major but any pre med advice would help)

Post Body

Hello all! I recently got accepted into NYU for a neural science major and was super happy. It is however, quite expensive and i’m weighing wether I should attend there or UTD or A&M. UT is also an option but I got CAPped and would have to do the CAP program for a year, and I don’t know if that’s a good idea as compared to my other options.

UTD is the most cost effective and bang for your buck eduaction. They are a feeder school w like a high 90% acceptance rate into med school. I also got a $10k per year scholarship to go there so it would be like $20k a year factoring that in. However, UTD is a commuter college and I don’t think I’d like it there or grow as a person. Definitely not a college experience which is something that is important to me (obviously not as important as getting into medical school). A&M seems okay but their education is worse than UTD and NYU. It does give you that college experience but I don’t know if being in a small town would be good or not and to be honest NYU just seems better in every facet. It has great opportunities everywhere you look (you’re in NYC), great academics (hard but doable?), great research, and I’m sure I would grow as a person while i’m there. NYU seems like an amazing opportunity that I’d regret passing over but it’s 80k per year. I plan to negotiate financial aid, and fill out lots of scholarships, but I don’t know if it’s worth it. Do you think from a pre med perspective that it would be?

Additional questions:

How did you like NYU?

Is it viable to live there a little spending money as I will likely be doing?

How hard is the neural science major? Is it possible to have a 4.0 while maintaining an adequate social life and experience New York? (I’m not gonna be partying or anything but New York is pretty cool and I’m from a suburb so exploring it would be cool)

Do you think going there is a viable option given the cost? My parents could cover it but they would have to severely cut back on expenses back home, and delay their retirement plans and other financial sacrifices

I could also switch into a psych major since i know med school doesn’t care about majors

How are you doing with your neuro degree right now? What kinds of job opportunities are you finding for yourself?
