Possible career change to transit
Post Body

Hey all. Have a question that has worked on a train before like a train operator or a conductor. I’m currently working in IT in a state organization and I’ve always liked working in IT. Just being able to solve problems for people before they become problems or being able to make someone’s job easier in some way. As of late my work hasn’t been feeling the same for me and that’s what brings me to transit. I’ve always loved trains as a kid growing up. Even to this day I still think they are cool. There was a posting for the train operator exam either last year or earlier this year. I applied but I’m just waiting for the test to come up. I’m worried that I might be a bit on the older side for a career change though

For those that have been a train operator or conductor did you come into it from another field? How did you know it was something that you wanted to do? How has it been and did you end up moving to something else when given the chance or did you stay with it?

I’m currently 38 so I was thinking that by the time I take the exam and they start calling back people on the list it would be 2025 minimum. So at the earliest I was thinking that I’d be 40 going into it.

I didn’t know people were making career changes that late and even doing something like this as the career change. That’s good to know.

Sorry for the slow follow-up

You can move into a new position and just go back if it doesn’t work for you? Does that affect your pay or have you looked at weirdly for promoting then taking a demotion?

Is TSS that bad? I just assumed that there is a salary ceiling to positions so it’s incentivized to move up when possible. Just to keep your pay moving up

So I would be looking at train operator. So it would be more than what I’m making now at the moment depending on the time I get called back I could be making more.

All NYCT positions are 25/55? It isn’t based on what Tier you are? So Tier 6 is either 20/63 or 25/63. That wouldn’t be the same for transit?

That's good to know. I just assumed that those going into TO from the outside you (in the general sense) would have experience with something similar. So seeing that you went from accounting to TO is reassuring to me seeing I would be coming from IT

If you don’t mind me asking did you go to a position outside something like TO or was your role office based

Well I’m in a state position now doing IT so I wouldn’t really lose too much seeing that I have the pension here. How would I be taking a pay cut?

Also why would I gain it after 25 years? Is that something specific to transit?

Well the pros is I get my regular increases from my union, the job isn’t difficult really (I think that’s just a matter of me working in IT so long), I have a set schedule of 9-5 with weekends off and all holidays off as well. My current salary is like 78k give or take a little bit. Overall one would probably say that’s the better place to be. A lot of people are retiring so there would be chances to move up for sure. So there’s that as well.

As for the pros and cons of working as a TO I can’t speak to it personally as I haven’t done it but from the videos I’ve watched, the people I’ve spoken to, and me having an interest in definitely helps in me wanting to move into it. I do believe the starting salary is higher than where I’m at but not by a whole lot. The hours I’ve heard are rough when you first start so having a normal schedule with normal days off or weekends off would not be a thing when you first start. Outside of that I can’t speak to it too knowledgeably. I’m definitely open to any insight someone here would have for sure.
