So I had made a previous post about trying to join a swim team called Team NY Aquatics to keep in shape as I have no motivation to go to a gym or whatever else. I thought it would be a good way to meet new people as I keep reading that is how you make friends that are gay. OH BOY!!! WAS I WRONG!
First you have to go through a bunch of hoops just to register. Credit card information and a whole bunch of other questionnaires.
All I knew was from what I found on their official website: bring a swim cap and a speedo. I specifically signed up for something called LPZ (Low Pressure Zone) which was advertised as a group of beginners who are learning how to swim. I have experience swimming all my life but I never learned to do it the way the professionals do it with their heads mostly under water.
So I get there and EVERYONE KNOWS HOW TO SWIM! I was the only odd man out! I felt so ashamed and singled out. The instructor who was very polite had 25 other people to teach other techniques to so understandably had no time to really teach me anything. I was told to do a single technique the whole time and just forgotten. I had brought swimming goggles thankfully and they broke making everything 100 times worse.
The sad part was that there was no socializing that I could see. Everyone either knew each other and formed cliques or just kept to their workout and barely spoke. Not a welcoming environment at all.
If you are thinking of trying this out do yourself a favor and DON'T! Unless you have a background in basic "professional" style swimming from high school or college ... NO NO NO!!!!
