I was watching the Netflix historical documentary about Alexander the Great who was super gay, and it made me start thinking about how we don’t talk about this enough. Oscar Wilde and Alan Turing and such? I think mine is probably James Baldwin, because he was a genius writer and not only was out when it was not tolerated, but he had huge balls to talk straight about race and politics in America when he could have been killed for it. My runner up is Harvey Milk who actually did die a martyr for the gay cause 🤘🏻
I don’t know if he’s my definitive gay hero but Rob Halford comes to mind. After reading his bio and seeing all the pitfalls, professional and personal, he had to overcome as a gay man singing heavy metal music…I definitely admire the man very much. And the fact that he lost little to no fans once he came out. Definitely a trailblazer who made it out the other side in a good way.
