Help with BDSP NuzLock! 3 wipes at first gym!

So pretty much playing the standard rules I guess if one pkm per new area and knock out=death. I’m only using the same healing items as the gym trainers too so I don’t heal stall them either. But Roark has kicked my team down thrice now! I’m using Chimchar, and this run I had zubat, shinx, abra, Magikarp,and Bidoof. Rollout Geodude made my team flat. And previous run Onix crit a knock down and smushed me.
Is it just luck? Grinding higher level to match them? Is there a TM I could find?
