This is a bit of a controvertial subject (as seen on co-workera fb post)
I work at a Central Florida hospital where at least 80% of patients are retired elderly caucasicans, many with dementia, alzhimers or sun downers.
Most of them are pleasantly confused and are easy to care for. But as with everything, there are bad apples. Some kick, spit, pee or poo to make us clean up the mess and there is the racist one.
We reported this to the charge and unit manager, all they said its just a confused old lady.
Well, the staff in this unit is mostly african american and hispanic.
Being confused or diagnosed with something like dementia does not excuse the patient from being racist. Personally I believe this is what this person harbored in their heart and now their illness destroyed whatever filter kept the racism deep down.
But hey, its a dementia patient, can't do nothing to fix them.
