In the Moment Coping
Post Body

Nursing is hella stressful, no matter where you work or what your speciality is.

I've been a nurse just short of 6 years with experience all over the map thanks to being a float. I have a solid knowledge base, good rapport with most coworkers, and pride myself on quality education and keeping patients involved in their care. Yet I STILL get overwhelmed at work, and it seems my tolerace for BS is getting lower and lower, especially over the last year (thanks COVID). I have a bad habit of skipping water refills, not taking my lunch until after 1500, and not utilizing my techs as much as I probably could.

So for myself and for anyone else who might benefit, I want to put together a little book of coping mechanisms, phrases, and reminders to help maintain composure and cool-headedness when it feels like everything is falling apart.

Here's what I have so far:

  • "Sometimes the minimum is enough"
  • "Safety before comfort"
  • "Only x hours to go"
  • "Strong back, soft front"
  • "I am only one person"
  • "One task at a time"
  • "'No' can be the right response"
  • "You aren't less if you need to delegate or ask for help"
  • "The only thing you can control is your own actions and responses"
  • Setting boundaries with patients and coworkers
  • Overtime/extra shifts are NOT compulsory, and you aren't a bad nurse/coworker/caregiver for not taking them
  • Hide in the bathroom or breakroom for just 60 seconds and breathe, do a grounding exercise, or listen to a favorite song if possible
  • High-quality trail mix and protein bars, etc to make sure I'm not completely going without food
  • Drinking a good amount of water when I get up in the morning
  • Spacing out caffiene rather than a lot first thing (decrease jitters and bathroom breaks)
  • Self care on off days, taking vacations and PTO (it's there for a REASON)

What else should go in the book? All suggestions appreciated!
