Specialty nurses (specifically dialysis registered nurses), how did you get to where you are?
Post Body

I am wondering how specialty nurses got to where you are now? I'm a registered nurse in a big city in Ontario, and looking into becoming a dialysis nurse. Currently, I have been on a surgical floor with (nearly) every type of surgery you can think of for 2 years and feel like I am getting burnt out on this unit. I've looked into dialysis nursing and it's an area of interest for me. I am taking a nephrology course online, but there are about 3 more courses I will need to complete a clinical to complete this certificate. All together, I am looking to be completed in 1.5- 2 years. I find it difficult to work full time and complete these courses in my free time due to a lack of nursing/ life balance. Has anyone here have experience in getting into a specialty they are not trained in, and completing required schooling for it? How long did it take you? I have seen ICU positions willing to send RNs back to school to complete the ICU certificate and wondering if anyone has seen this for other specialties? Any advice is appreciated, as I really feel like a change is needed in my nursing career at present.
