I had my first ever med error today…

Post Body

And I feel like shit. I took a verbal order from the PA for 500mg of Rocephin. Injected, sent pt on their way… I work at an urgent care so we don’t have a Pyxis and we don’t scan meds. As I’m going to put the order in, an alert popped up saying that pt has an allergy to cephalosporins… que panic. I go and tell the PA what happened, she also has an “oh shit” moment.

Thankfully, the patient ended up fine. I called him and told him to come back, and apologized for the mistake. He was a good sport about it, wasn’t even mad or upset with us. We gave IM Benadryl and held them for a while to monitor for any reaction. This is my first ever med error and I’m feeling really bummed about it, mostly at myself.
