TW/CW: Gun Violence
New to this sub, so this question may have been asked before.
I am familiar with the allusions to school shootings and rough upbringings in P.O.D.'s early works like Southtown and Satellite. Sonny Sandoval, Marcos Curiel, and Wuv Bernardo all grew up in south San Diego.
However, I am curious as to if they make any references to the San Ysidro McDonald's massacre of 1984. 20 killed and many injured. Before the Luby's Cafeteria shooting of 1991 in Killeen, TX, it was then the deadliest american mass shooting.
I am curious if that was one of the things on Sonny's mind when he sings the chorus in "Southtown." That album came out in 1999, 15 years after the shooting. Those three men were all born in the 70s, so they would have been in elementary-middle school at the time of the shooting.
They grew up in that same community, so I would expect them to be intimately familiar with it, as well as potentially have loved ones who were in the vicinity that day, or maybe they themselves were.
