I just found out I'll be taking over GMing for my group later this year as our usual GM is having a baby. I ran Numenera briefly for my group and I really like it, so I'm keen to go back to it. I'm a big fan of kaiju movies, especially Pacific Rim, and I'm thinking an adventure centering around a battle between giant monsters and the PCs piloting some sort of giant robots would be cracking good.
Anyone have any experience running "mecha" combat in an RPG (not necessarily Numenera)? Coming up with a giant monster shouldn't be too hard, but how would you translate a PC having a super-powerful suit or vehicle? And of course, this being Numenera, it wouldn't be anything as cut and dried as a robotic mech...I'll come up with something suitably weird (maybe some sort of living matter that can shape itself according to the user's thoughts).
Or maybe I would simply have the PCs "grow" to enormous size, enough to take on the kaiju directly. But I'd fear that would just feel the same in combat as any "normal" encounter. I want to capture the feeling of being gigantic, wrecking the landscape, and wreaking general havoc, as well as making them feel extremely powerful (and of course, I'll have some contrivance for why their mecha-suits aren't permanent).
Any thoughts? Thanks!
