Just got back from Zipolite on Saturday after 14 days of sun and hot weather - a great escape from the cold and snow of Ontario.
Some of you have asked for a trip report so here it is.
Zipolite is NOT a nudist resort. Zipolite is a small, authentic, hippie, Mexican beach town that embraces diversity... including nudism.
Zipolite, has Mexico's only official clothing optional beach - about 1.5 km (1 mile) long of soft sand and warm water. Great surfing too.
We had sunny 32-33c weather for 14 days straight and the forecast for the next 10 days when we left was the same. Temps dipped to a comfortable 24c at night - great for sleeping.
You can be nude 100% of the time.. if you want. We stayed at Hotel Nude. You can be nude everywhere except they ask that you cover up if you are sitting for a meal. I am not sure why because you need to walk through the restaurant to get to the beach and bar - I chose to be naked and not eat there much.
We tended to eat at the bars and restaurants along the beach for breakfast and lunch (occasionally dinner). Most required a cover up. I would put on a VERY short sarong when I stepped off the beach and into the restaurant area. You could be naked if you wanted to be served while in a beach chair.
Most evenings we would eat at one of the many restaurants on the main street. We didn't have a bad meal anywhere. I would call out "Nice Place on the Beach" for its friendly staff and great location and Pizzeria Italiana La Fenice for awesome pizza.
Virtually all hotels and restaurants are open air so they were great in the warm weather but can be noisy in the evenings as there are no windows to insulate the sound.
Only about 25% of people were nude on the beach with a broad range of ages and body shapes. Everyone is very open minded. I always felt comfortable - except once. On the 2nd last day a group of school kids showed up for a surfing contest and they parked themselves in front of my beach lounge. They all had swim suits on of course and I am M65 and naked. I know they see it all of the time but I felt uneasy splayed open with 12-13yr girls close by. More my hang up than theirs I am sure.
We are relatively new nudists so we were traveling alone. It would have been an even better experience with some friends. We met a nice woman (Lori) from Winnipeg on the day before we flew back but otherwise most other guests were Spanish speaking or were American or Canadians living and working there (I wish).
A few more tips..
- Take Gravol for the taxi ride from the airport. We were charged $1,000 MXN from airport and $800 MXN return - it is hard to negotiate at the airport. If you are thrifty take a walk to the taxi stand outside of the airport for a better rate.
- Check and double check your paper work and keep it handy while traveling - vaccine passport (not needed to enter Mexico but you need it to return to Canada), Mexican custom and immigration forms, PCR testing for Canadians returning.
- Most places have wi-fi sufficient for most browsing and chat - probably not sufficient for streaming.
- Pay attention to the life guards when they whistle. There are strong undertoes in certain areas and they will wave you to move up or down the beach to avoid them. We witnessed about 8 rescues during the time we were on the beach - luckily no fatalities.
- The life guards also double as surfing instructors. I didn't see anyone nude surfing though.
- Mobile Covid testing van is parked kitty corner to the Bacco Restaurant. Can't miss it - big ass Covid Testing sign. PCR tests (Canadian) taken before 4pm are done that evening and emailed to you. They do rapid anti-gen tests too for our American friends.
- Yoga and meditation is huge - yoga classes are available at several locations
- Take in a massage - naked on the beach if you wish - I had one a the Hotel Nude pool
- The beach faces south so sunrises are at the East end and sunsets in the West. You must also take in at least one sunset at Playa del Amor at the far East end of the beach - it is a religious experience.
- Very few people speak English but they are all friendly and eager to teach you. Learn a few nouns before you go and use your Google translator. We knew zero and got by.
- Central Canada residents: Air Canada flies weekly (Saturdays) to HUX. It saves a lot of time and Covid risk from transferring at a US hub or Mexico City.
- Bring pesos - most places don't take credit cards or charge you a fee and USDs are not commonly accepted. There are two ATMs in town but they sometimes run out cash. Run a tab at your hotel so you can charge to your room and CC
- If you are a nudist - remove half of the clothes you packed before you go - you won't need them. I went with a suitcase half the size I normally do on a textile vacation and I still took home lots of clean clothes. In the 14 days we were there I could count the number of hours I had clothes on with just my fingers. Far better than a nude cruise.
We totally loved our nude vacation and Zipolite lived up to everything we heard about it. Can't wait to go back.
