It had been a long day of driving. What first started with a stunning sunrise in the Rocky Mountains had been an inexorable transition to the flat, featureless corn fields of the Great Plains. Each day grew shorter as the bygone days of summer had been replaced with autumn, and the first signs of winter could now be seen on the horizon. A storm, which was sure to bring to first snows to the harvested farmlands, was fast approaching. My eyes grew as heavy as the setting sun on the horizon in my rearview mirror.
Ahead I could see the sign of a hotel, its promise of rest too strong to resist. After pulling my car into the parking lot and checking in, my empty stomach asserted itself. Thankfully, a restaurant sharing the parking of the hotel made for an easy decision. My weary mind already unwilling to be taxed any further.
I pulled open the door just as a chilled gust of wind tried to rip it from my hands. This place was the epitome of casual dining. A small slice of corporate America, and its prescribed pieces of flair, dropped right into the middle of rural life.
I walked to the bar and helped myself to a seat. Scanning the beer list, I made my drink selection and flagged down the bar tender. As my drink was being poured I finally lifted my head and expended the necessary energy to appraise the room. Aside from me everyone I could see was plainly involved in farming, betrayed by their rough hands and necks red from many hours working in the sun. All of them drinking Bud Lite. As the bartender handed me my corporatized IPA, I began to get a glimmer of how much I stood out.
