HB 368 will convene a committee of fire professionals to recommend changes to fire code which will allow small apartment buildings with one staircase. This will bring Virginia's code in line with Washington State, Oregon, California and many European countries. Usually fire code is changed to allow single staircases when offset with other fire-safety measures like sprinklers.
Single stair buildings tend to have more 3 and 4 bedroom units because most of the units are in corners of the building with more windows. That's good news for young families who often struggle to find 3 bed units.
Aesthetically, these buildings can be really nice. The 5 story, block long apartment buildings that we see so much are usually built because of the two stair requirements.
HB 368 was presented by Delegate Adele McClure from Arlington and Schuyler VanValkenburg from the Richmond area.
