Lets look at the places where NJB mentions for the worse: Houston, London Canada, Toronto, etc. All of this places doesn't provide choice other than car- because walking/cycling is too dangerous, and public transit doesn't exist.
On the other hand, the places he mentions for the best: Amsterdam and other europan cities such as Paris or Switzerland, have a variety of Choices: You can have a bike! Oh, you don't like riding a bike. So you can have public transit! If you don't like that you can have a car, or just walk!
This variety of choice leads to more hapiness (because everyone do what they want), to more social equality (becuse you can even walk most of the time), and it's just more fair that everyone will be able to get to work however they want.
The US calls themselves "the land of freedom". Besides- the freedom from owning a car. By that standart- the Netherland, Real London, Paris, Madrid, and other european cities are the real land of freedom.
