A Question About Politics and the Meaning behind their Music
Post Body

So to preface this, I want to be clear im not trying to start shit or slander anyone, nothing more is and has been my favorite band for the better part of a decade. I've been to two shows in the last month alone, and their music has helped me get through some tough stuff. I genuinely love the band and their music which is why I feel invested and a bit concerned about some stuff I've been hearing recently.

So in general I tend to be a little out of the loop on stuff, I only heard about the whole truck thing like a few weeks ago. I recently saw some fans of set it off were upset about them touring with nothing more, which confused me a bit. Turns out people were still upset about the legal trouble Johnny got into with his ex but also about some pretty right wing tweets he has liked and transphobic comments he has made.

I went and looked for myself and Jonny does have some pretty "questionable" liked tweets as well as authored tweets. He has liked stuff from notable right-wing fuckhead Ben Shapiro, anti-vax tweets, straight up racist shit, a ton of stuff from "end wokeness" accounts, transphobic shit, a lot of tweets attacking Domestic violence victims, and more. These tweets have gone back years too, before any abuse allegations or anything from his ex.

I encourage you to look for yourself before commenting because I think people should make their own judgements, but it's pretty bad in my opinion.

Which brings Me to my question, what the fuck? Am I missing something? All of the band members have always come across as super supportive and cool people. Mark literally wore a t-shirt promoting loving each other at one of the concerts I went to. Also Their songs (at least to me) read as super liberal and anti-capitalist I was pretty sure the song "tired of winning" was about corporate greed and destroying the environment. Like am I crazy for reading the songs this way and is this like a well known thing? Am I totally wrong about the meaning behind basically all their songs??

I'm curious what yall think, what are your thoughts on the meaning behind their music? does this surprise you? Has he been public with his more "extreme" beliefs? Is this even accurate?

Tldr: Jonny Hawkins has liked some messed up right wing shit and it is making me rethink the meaning of their music, how do yall see their music and is this something that makes sense for you?
