Hi there,
I've been helping redditors out on r/assistance and r/randomkindness. We're irish and I wanted to do something for people at home who might actually need something. What i've enjoyed through those subs is actually having a direct impact on peoples lives, rather than donating to a charity. I have talked to some charities locally to set up and run things, but I felt that spreading / sharing the love on a wider level might be better.
We're doing this because my brother committed suicide last year (his 1 year is on 2nd March). He was a recovering drug addict and had some money troubles. I helped him a lot during his last few year(s) to get him back on his feet and I know what buying a basket of food, or giving him supplies meant and helped him get through some stuff.
We wanted to do something similar but mainly for people at home and specfiically, wanted to do something like offer:
- Help for students (e.g. stationary / books / etc)
- Help for artists (e.g. pencils / paint brushes / sketchpads)
- Help for struggling families (e.g. ordering them an online basket)
- Offering an ear to listen
- Help for people who have pets (e.g. not enough cash to buy cat/dog food)
We're doing this soon anyway for the other subs and putting together care packages for as many people need it and mailing it to them.
After posting in r/ireland, I was encouraged to set up a sub to help locals post their needs or what we can all help them in and many people suggested they'd be happy to contribute too.
As such, I have created a sub https://www.reddit.com/r/IrelandAssistance/ that will allow us to have a place to post in times of need, and help others when we are able to also.
I'd be very open to suggestions and ideas about what I could do to help this sub grow and ideas of what people may actually need!
Thanks in advance for reading :)
