I'm saying goodbye to an intimate friend who has entered a relationship with someone who wants to be monogamous (edited to add that he forgot to tell me his girlfriend wants full monogamy until we had already done some decidedly nonmonogamous things together, like we used to). Just wanted to share part of my farewell speech.

"I know that you are not one to close doors. But I am, so the responsibility is mine. Think of a small house with two doors. In fair weather, you can leave both doors open and let in the summer breeze, the sunshine and the birdsong. But in a storm, you need to close at least one of the doors so the wind doesn't enter your house and starts blowing your stuff around."
