Is being single the same thing as being in an open relationship?

I (24F) recently met a guy and k told him what I wanted, an open relationship. And he said “I’m better at being single or an open relationship since it’s the same thing 😂 “
And that didn’t sound right to me. Like there has to be a distinction, right?
Update: after going back and forth trying to explain how it’s not the same thing he called me ugly 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
