How do you ask people for their STI status?

Hey y'all,
Recently I slept with someone for the first time after opening up my relationship and had barrier-free oral sex. Because the hook up was quite unexpected and I am fairly inexperienced I didn't think to ask them for their STI status before hooking up. I wanted to bring it up in person the day after, but there wasn't an opportunity for a private conversation, so I'll text them. How do you have that conversation? What do you think is the best way to ask?
