So I've experienced some petty harassment from the mod team of r/Polyamory when trying to post a topic about HSV, and I'm wondering if others here have had similar experiences here on Reddit.
tl;dr:
When trying to post a simple request for books, articles, podcasts, etc. related specifically to the experiences of STI polyamorous men (a small but somewhat unique intersection), my post was locked in mod review and I was forced to negotiate with the mod team to get it posted, despite having not broken any rules.
The deets:
Note: I admittedly didn't start out this conversation very well, since having HSV-related posts censored is really common and distressing. Maybe some of ya'll can relate. As you can see, I apologized for the misunderstanding and was as direct and polite as possible during the conversation. This is what went down:
The mod demanded that I make a bunch of edits to suit their personal taste, and repeatedly lied about my content and motives in order to attack my character or whatever. From the exchange, it was clear that:
- It wasn't a personal grudge (I'm not active in that community; Just a reader)
- The reason for censorship was related to my STI status (they complained about the subject matter even being present being on the sub)
- They do not believe HSV people should have access to support resources (I was told to "Make those resources myself")
- The staff was willing to lie and put words in my mouth to keep me away (despite not having recent history in the sub)
- The staff unfairly demanded that I justify myself and edit my post (despite not breaking any rules) where others are not subject to the same demands
(I'm having trouble taking a full page screenshot of the chat on my PC, so the convo is posted above as a series of mobile screenshots. If anyone knows a good way to export modmail, please let me know!)
My request:
If you've experienced this type of censorship and/or harassment here on Reddit (in r/Polyamory or elsewhere), please share your experience!
It would be great to shine a light on this type of behavior to create safer spaces for STI people online, especially here on Reddit. Thanks!
