What are some not obvious guidelines that you've noticed work?

We have had a few girlfriends over the years, all have ended civilly but we don't know many others in this community and are curious if there's anything we could implement that would improve our relationships. We already follow by the simple stuff, always being honest, keeping communication open, seeing struggles from all sides, basically all the normal relationship stuff but is there anything out of the ordinary you guys have noticed really helps?
