I (f67) decided to tell my closest friend of over 30 years that I’m now living a poly lifestyle. It was getting too hard to avoid all the things I might say accidentally. I’m a very open person and don’t have “secrets” from the people closest to me. I’ve accidentally said something I had to explain away three times this year. I was not concerned whether I’d lose her friendship, but concerned about whether I’d cause her to stress over worrying about me. I sent her an email first with a bit of info, addressed a couple of her concerns up front, included a couple links to some good info, saying that we could talk when she was ready. We talked today. Although in her late 70’s, she handled it very well. We could even joke a bit about it. I don’t think she’s going to be overly concerned about me and now I don’t have to worry about trying to explain it all extemporaneously if I slip up.
