I’ve been poly for about a year. (F67) Only one long-term friend and one family member know about my new lifestyle. I’m typically an open book with people I care about. There have been 3 instances when I accidentally said something to someone that I had to quickly explain away, like “Oh my boyfriend has lots of lady friends”, and “My boyfriend doesn’t mind that I look for friends on dating apps”. I’m not good at hiding my true self and it feels like I’m lying — particularly to my 30 year best friend. Sooooo, I’ve decided it’s better to tell my best friend rather than wait and accidentally say something. I have some things that I’ve saved to share with her — like myths about polyamory. That sort of thing. I know she’ll be worried for my safety with STDs, so I’m going to include how I protect myself. I’m thinking about sending her an email (which isn’t unlike me when there’s a serious subject), let her digest it, with a request to have a follow up conversation when she’s ready.
I would love to hear about your experiences with opening up to someone — especially if you thought it would be difficult for them to handle. I really appreciate the support of this community. Thank you in advance.
