Is there matter outside consciousness? (listening to some Rupert Spira)

Everything is consciousness and activity within it, yes? Spira seems to contradict materialism when he says that there is something outside of consciousness (matter) that gives rise to consciousness.
I don't see an issue with this in and of itself...I've read his books. Is there something I'm missing here?
I still haven't grokked the direct experience of nonduality.
