Why do people keep bringing up Call of Duty?

No Man's Sky isn't really an exciting game. Yet I've seen a trend from apologists bringing up Call of Duty whenever someone critique's NMS. I'm not a fan of CoD or most FPS games. What's the point of the comparison? Are folks suggesting that CoD is "boring and repetitive?" If that's the case, I challenge NMS fans to tell me what is so amazing about NMS, minus the procedurally generated universe.
